Face, Uninterrupted. (Artist Website)

I began my journey into the world of makeup as many do by way of cosmetics. As a former art student, the fundamentals of color theory, texture, shadows, and light were alluring. Mingled with a deep love for people, I knew I had somehow stumbled into the correct field for myself. Over six years, cosmetics allowed me to work under some of the great talents, and study different theories and techniques. Eventually, I began developing my own methods of ‘making faces.’

This artistic evolution eventually inspired me to branch out into rolling camera makeup when a production company offered me a key artist role for an independent film. Accepting this position forced me to take an enormous leap of faith, leaving the safety of the cosmetic line I had come to love and lead. This opportunity was also an introduction to special effects makeup. I accepted the job and completed the experience. Production was pleased with my work, but I did not have the arrogance to believe I had the education to continue on this new path without additional training. I had much to learn and I needed to learn from a master. My search for a teacher leads me to Kerry Herta’s Colour Box Makeup Studios.

There was an immediate noted difference in ‘Colour Box’ compared to the other schools I researched. Active industry artists, with incredible credentials, taught the classes. The price point was not hobbling financially, and the courses were set up as ‘boot camps’, where I could acquire tools of the trade and still work to support myself in the meantime. The deciding factor in choosing this school, however, was the woman leading the company.

Kerry Herta personally replied to my initial inquiry into taking her class. She was more interested in my experience, passion, and motivation than how quickly I could send a tuition check. She spoke to me as a friend and a guidance counselor, and placed me in the class she felt would best suit my schedule and skill level.

The course itself was more than I could have ever expected. In a gentle, no-nonsense fashion, Kerry broke down the basics of the industry: tools, techniques, etiquette, and jargon. After the first day of boot camp, I realized I had spent six years as a “makeup putter-on’r.” By the end of boot camp 2, I had received the essential information to become a true makeup artist. In addition to newfound skill, Kerry empowered her class with the guidelines to brand ourselves properly as artists who now can turn this knowledge into careers.

In the eight short months of my Colour Box certification, my career has truly soared. My private clientele has doubled and I hold a consistent contract as Makeup Designer for one of the most prestigious and oldest professional live theatres in the Southeast. I have also worked as key makeup artist in commercials, independent films, and a major motion picture.

After completing work on a public service announcement (PSA) for domestic abuse awareness, the producer informed me that his lead cinematographer made the following statement: “I have never been able to shoot HD special effects makeup as close as I have with Jared’s work.” I owe that great compliment to my Colour Box Makeup Studio training.

Kerry is not only a masterful artist and teacher; she is a true mentor and friend. She does not send her students blindly into the unknown. Her own career keeps her schedule busy, but she has always found time to reach out whenever I have needed guidance or encouragement. And I am a better artist because of it.
